America had largely withdrawn, and the North Vietnamese were closing in on what was known at the time as Saigon, the largest city in South Vietnam. It was about to fall to communist rule. The United States with support from allied nations sought to execute an evacuation operation of Saigon. This included the topic of discussion today, Operation Babylift. Operation Babylift is known primarily for two reasons. The evacuation of thousands of children, including babies from South Vietnam, and the devastating plane crash that claimed 138 of those lives.
