The problem is that when one wheel starts to slip, the standard open differential sends all drive torque (or power) to that wheel, the wheel with the least grip. On the MK7 GTi it has something called 'XDS' or 'expanded differential lock' which is a fancy way of saying 'using the brakes to slow down the freely spinning wheel'. This is obviously a slow and inefficient way to maximise performance. To solve this problem we install a Wavetrac LSD. This LSD is an "Automatic Torque Biasing" differential that automatically and seamlessly sends power to the wheel with the most grip. This improves acceleration and makes the MK7 GTi feel much more stable and confidence-inspiring. You can also turn the XDS off, allowing the Wavetrac to function as intended and freeing up the brakes to work as brakes and not as a cheap differential. You may be wondering what the difference is between the Quaife LSD and the Wavetrac LSD? The main difference between the two is that the Wavetrac can still perform like an ATB when axle load is lost which happens when wheels slip, suspension unloads (cornering or crests) or wheel lift.
