Omer Plays Bass . . . Talking Heads – Wild Wild Life (bass cover)

Omer Plays Bass . . . Talking Heads – Wild Wild Life (bass cover) Bass by Tina Weymouth Bass Used in this Video: Dingwall Combustion 5 Hope you have a look and if you do, don’t forget to click 'Like" and subscribe to the channel As a kid learning to play bass most of my heroes and idols were guys. That is just how it was – most guys in a band were guys. As a bass player, there were few female examples to look to – but those that were there were just really good. Of course there was the legendary Carol Kaye, bassist for the Wrecking Crew and a true trailblazer on all those great ‘60s records with the Beach Boys and the Spector "Wall of Sound", in the ‘70’s Suzie Quatro, in the 80’s Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, Micki Steele from the Bangles (ex the Runaways), Kathy Valentine from the Go Go’s and Kim Deal from the Pixies/the Breeders and a few others including (Canadian) Sandy Horne from the Spoons and the 90’s with Gail Ann Dorsey with Bowie, Meshell Ndegeocello (and that funky ‘Wild Nights’ line with Mellencamp) and D’arcy Wretzky with Smashing Pumpkins, who also featured ex-Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur and many others (including Sheryl Crow - yes she is a very good bass player - check out her "Be Myself" album). Today, there are many great women playing bass with some of the biggest artists out there - Esperanza Spalding, Talia Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck), (Canadian) Rhonda Smith (Jeff Beck, Beyonce, Prince) to name a few and many more. For me, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads was always, well just a great bass player period with interesting and unpredictable bass lines with great tone and a take no sh*t attitude like calling out “pseudo-intellectuals like David Byrne” as she referred to him. Ouch. That’s tough coming from a bandmate, but when you are that good . . . well. ‘Wild Wild Life’, with seemingly nonsensical lyrics and a great video was the leadoff single from Talking Heads seventh album “True Stories”, the bands next to last album before splitting, continuing on a string of hits from the band over their Rock N’ Roll Hall worthy career. Talking Heads, with Byrne on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Jerry Harrison on guitar, Chris Frantz on drums and Weymouth on bass, grew out of the New York punk/new wave CBGB scene in the late ‘70’s with other bands like Blondie, the Ramones and other bands who played regularly at the seminal club, becoming a quirky and interesting band in the ‘80s with catchy, intellectual and thoughtful songs and an extremely strong visual aesthetic. If you haven’t seen the David Byrne “American Utopia” Broadway show concert film featuring songs from Talking Heads and Byrne’s solo career, you should check it out. I really like the hits (like 'Wild Wild Life' and also ‘Psycho Killer’, ‘Burning Down the House’, ‘And She Was’, ‘Once In A Lifetime’, ‘Take Me To The River’) but never dug really deeply into the albums beyond some casual listening but I always recognized Tina as a great player and made sure I knew the parts on these songs. They are hummable, interesting and often unexpected, that she described as “deconstructive minimalism - playing well-constructed, simple parts with perfect time and a whole lot of feeling, avoiding flabby bombast”. 'Wild Wild Life' is that - a fun part to play, very melodic without being solo-y and very much punctuating the melody of the track in the chorus and supporting the rhythm in the verse. It took three auditions until Byrne grudgingly asked Weymouth to join, concerned that she had never played bass before, and numerous times wanted to replace her early in the bands career. But in there end, even with the inter-band feuds, bitterness and arguments over songwriting credits, as Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz said, “without Tina Weymouth in Talking Heads, we would have been just another band”. Disclaimer: I am not saying this is exactly how Tina Weymouth played this song, but it is how I would play it if I was playing it at a gig.
