🌎 LIVE in 4K: Fortification of North Berm Wall from Iceland Volcano

Crews are working to reinforce the northern berm where lava breached the top last week. This berm protects the famous Blue Lagoon resort area and the Svartsengi geothermal power station. This work at berm reinforcement is in anticipation of a new eruption in the area in the coming weeks. From IMO: The eruption that started on the Sundhnúks crater series on May 29 is over and no activity has been seen in the crater since June 22. The eruption lasted for 24 days and was the fifth eruption in the Sundhnúks crater series since December 2023. Furthermore, the lava bed that formed is the largest in terms of volume and area. Although no lava flows from the crater, there is still considerable movement in the lava bed north of Sýlingarfell because there is still liquid lava under the solidified surface. In the last two days there has been activity in the lava tubes that crossed the defense wall at Sýlingarfell and also in the lava bed north of the defense wall. We can continue to expect that movement will be noticed in the lava bed in the coming days, as it takes considerable time for this process to stop. About ten days after the eruption, landris in Svartsengi began to be measured again, indicating that magma accumulation there continues. The land mass has been stable since then but is now slower than it was between the last events. The National Weather Service continues to monitor the area, and measurements over the next few days and weeks will help interpret the potential development of the earthquakes. --- This camera is situated on the southern tip of Þorbjörn.
