Shetland in an electric campervan

Electric campervan touring Shetland Isles. In May 2024, Stephen took the Wheelhome Vikenze III-e XL to the Shetland Isles. Taking the overnight NorthLink ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick in a pet-friendly cabin as his Sheltie, Isla, was with him. The journey from Brentwood to Aberdeen incorporated one overnight stop at The Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Bellingham, Northumberland. The return journey of approx 550 miles from Aberdeen was completed in one day. See separate short video titled "Great EV Chargers from Essex to Aberdeen" if you're interested in the EV charging experience. Campsite fees on Shetland were around £27/night inc electric hook up. Electricity costs have risen on Shetland as elsewhere, but he experienced no issues with charging the EV overnight on all campsites but offered to pay a little more if he'd covered more than 50 miles that day, typically £2-4/night. He covered 950 miles on Shetland alone, and averaged 2.8m/kWh, which is slightly less than his previous visit but this time he was in a long wheelbase vehicle and had to make a great number of extra stops and pull-aways due to the filming requirements. Temperatures were mostly cool, typically around 7-10C. There were plenty of slow EV chargers at places such as Lerwick, Scalloway car park and visitor centres which are perfect if you’re stopping to explore for an hour or two anyway. They were generally 47pence/kWh and added about 30+ miles in an hour. The journey to Aberdeen averaged 3.2m/kWh at about 55-60mph. As an experiment, he covered the return journey at 65-70mph and returned 2.7m/kWh. This required an additional stop for charging so although travelling faster, the journey time was almost identical - but cost more money! This reinforces his recommendation that keeping to a lower and steady speed is the way to do it. We really hope you enjoy the video and feel free to leave your comments.
