Sponge filters work by relying upon the vacuum created by rising air through water. They are a great, cheap, and effective mode of filtration. Sponge filters work by using air. As the air rises, it takes water up with it. As the water also rises, new water comes in behind it to fill the void. As it fills that void it passes through the sponge where it is biologically and mechanically filtered. Sponge filters are a very versatile form of filtration, easy to set up, and easy to operate.
