Ancient Stone Hunting Tools May Be Related to Animal's Demise: A collection of five Paleoindian tools found near where the Cleveland Museum of Natural History Museum’s Hartley mastodon skeleton was unearthed in eastern Ohio shows that ancient hunters were spending time in the area in roughly the same time period when the animal died 13,000 years ago. In this video, the Museum’s Curator and John Otis Hower Chair of Archaeology, Dr. Brian Redmond, explains the tools’ discovery, what analysis reveals about them, and how they might be connected to the mastodon. The design of the five tools recovered from a Columbiana County farm indicates that they were produced by prehistoric Native Americans from the Clovis culture, which occupied Ohio and other North American sites at the end of the last ice age. Dr. Redmond and colleagues from Kent State University, Illinois State University, Southern Methodist University and Rogers State University recently published the results of their analysis of the tools in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports. www.cmnh.org www.cmnh.org/archaeology
