Stretta comparably effective in difficult-to-treat GERD patients

In this exclusive video from DDW 2016, Mark D. Noar, MD, director of the Heartburn and Reflux Study Center in Baltimore, discusses new data showing that radiofrequency energy delivery to the lower esophageal sphincter with the Stretta procedure is comparably effective in GERD patients who are obese, those who have had prior surgery, and those with laryngopharyngeal reflux, or LPR. “We now have three very nice expanded indications where prior those patients could only consider surgery, and that would be patients with various forms of obesity, ... LPR patients, as well as those who have had prior surgical procedures,” Noar said. “So this is added greatly to our ability to treat our patients in a noninvasive and very safe manner.” In one study, Noar and colleagues stratified 73 patients with medically refractory GERD by BMI, and found that 10 years after the Stretta procedure (Mederi Therapeutics), all groups (normal, overweight and obese) experienced similarly significant disease improvement, increases in patient satisfaction, and decreased medication requirements. Similarly, in a study of 78 patients with LPR vs. 21 with standard refractory GERD, all parameters showed statistically significant improvement across the entire cohort at 10 years. Finally, in a study of 18 patients with refractory GERD after failed laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication vs. 81 refractory GERD patients with no previous Nissen fundoplication, both groups experienced significant improvements in quality of life, satisfaction and medication use, and those with previous surgery experienced slightly better outcomes at 10 years. Mederi also launched the Stretta RFT3 system at DDW, which includes “added measurement markings on the Stretta catheter, more visual procedure guides, and increased automation,” according to a press release.
