Join me as I take a look at the romantic scenes between Anakin and Padme as well as behind the scenes info and the discourse surrounding them. The whole notion of Lucas being surrounded by “yes-men” is a hotly debated topic that could be explored a lot more than I did in the video, but I just wanted to briefly give some examples of his collaborative process. But don’t just take my word, there are the accounts of authors J. W. Rinzler and Paul Duncan who assert that the production of the original trilogy was very similar to the prequels. It may seem disingenuous of me to use a scripted encounter with Harrison Ford to paint him as grumpy but come on, they wouldn’t have written that if Ford didn’t already have that reputation due to actual comments he’s made akin to the other two I presented in the video. I still haven’t found the origin of the claim that Christensen got the part because he looked good with Portman, but I found an article where Lucas attributes Anakin’s casting to his young daughter’s assessment of his looks. I think he’s just making a point about how his children weren’t fully aware of the cultural phenomenon that Star Wars is and how innocent they were about the whole thing, he’s not going in depth about the actual casting process or anything. As mentioned in the video, other interviews and bts material confirm there were lots of factors like his James Dean edge, and chemistry with Portman.
