Windrush 75 | Reflections

As part of our NHS75 celebrations, we are marking ‘Windrush 75’, the 75th anniversary of the ship HMT Empire Windrush arriving at Tilbury Docks, Essex. The ship was full of passengers – 1,027 in fact. Many of these passengers came from countries that were under the rule of the British Empire, with over 800 coming from countries including Jamaica, Bermuda, Trinidad, and then British Guiana. The passengers onboard had been invited and encouraged to move to the UK following World War II. It was hoped they would help fill post-war labour shortages and support rebuilding a damaged economy. Many employers benefitted from this including the NHS. It’s known that there were 54,000 nursing vacancies, for instance, when it was founded in 1948, and many were filled by those from the Windrush generation. To recognise and celebrate the contributions and legacy of the Windrush Generation and beyond, some of our colleagues of Caribbean heritage are sharing their thoughts, experiences and reflections on 75 years of Windrush and the NHS.
