In an age that strove constantly for heightened dramatic expression through opera and descriptive music, he stuck firmly to the well-tried Classical genres of the symphony and the concerto, and to chamber music. His counterpoint was enriched by his knowledge of Bach, his formal practices founded upon those of Beethoven. And yet when in 1853 Schumann declared him to be 'He that should come' (by which he meant Beethoven's successor), this placed upon Brahms a public burden which intensified his private belief that he was unworthy to fill the great man's shoes. Though it seems likely that Brahms composed over 100 chamber works, a mere two dozen survived his ruthless self-criticism to attest to his mastery in this most intimate and exacting of genres.
