Community Gardens and the Conquest of Land

Community gardens provide urban green spaces, places to socialize, and a source of healthy food - often to neighborhoods that have suffered from decades of disinvestment. Community gardens are at the center of gentrification battles. Urbanists, developers, and free marketeers see community gardens as vacant land, fully disregarding the significant impact these gardens have on neighborhoods. And worse yet, the gardens themselves may actually spur the interest of gentrifying forces. Let's talk about community gardens and the neoliberal conquest of land. In this video, I'll explore the history of community garden policy in the US, how community gardens reinforce neoliberal capitalism, the ways that the gentrification machine reclassifies community-serving land as vacant, and finally, how community gardens have a radical role in resisting those neoliberal forces.
