International Date Line And Great Circles | Geography NCERT | UPSC Prelims and Mains 2023

The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole that separates two calendar days. The IDL roughly follows the 180° line of longitude and passes through the Pacific Ocean. In some places, this line appears as zig-zag, deviating to the meridian’s east or west. When one crosses the IDL, one either gains or loses a day depending on which way they are traveling. When one moves from the East of the IDL to the West of the IDL, a day is lost and vice-versa. Great Circle is a circle on the surface of a sphere which lies in a plane passing through its centre. As it represents the shortest distance between any two points on a sphere, a great circle of the earth is the preferred route taken by a ship or aircraft for navigation. Geography is a very important subject in the UPSC exam for both IAS Prelims and Mains papers. Geography for UPSC covers Indian Geography as well as World geography.
