My instagram   / anatomy.knowledge   The ischioanal fossa (formerly called ischiorectal fossa) is the fat-filled wedge shaped space located lateral to the anal canal and inferior to the pelvic diaphragm. It is somewhat prismatic in shape, with its base directed to the surface of the perineum, and its apex at the line of meeting of the obturator and anal fasciae. The cutaneous innervation of the anal region is provided by the following nerves: - Inferior rectal nerves (S2, S3, S4): It supplies the skin around the anus and over the ischiorectal fossae. - Perineal branch of S4 nerve: It supplies the skin posterior to the anus. Pudendal Canal (Alcock’s Canal) It is a fascial canal present in the lateral wall of the ischiorectal fossa. The pudendal canal is formed by the splitting of the obturator internus fascia. It contains the Internal pudendal vein and artery, and the pudendal nerve. #ischiorectal #ischioanal #perineum
