A lot of the time when I'm covering modern metal songs (see: Periphery, Tesseract, et al) I spend ages actually notating the parts, then learning and finally memorizing it. Occasionally I'll practice my ear training and memory and try and work out parts just by hearing the shape of the rhythms and trying to figure out something that approximates - this is one of them. Oddly I never listened to much Opeth despite them being a big influence to quite a few musician buddies I've played with; but here is one song that caught my ear from their latest album while binging since I'll be catching them live in Singapore tomorrow!
