The terms Kali, Arnis, and Eskrima all refer to the same art, the weapons-based fighting system indigenous to the Philippines. The Philippines is an island country composed of 7,100 islands, and different regions call the art differently, hence the different terms. To avoid confusion brought about by the different names used to refer to the same art, some practitioners, I included, choose to refer to the art simply as Filipino Martial Arts or FMA as a unifying umbrella term. FMA, as a weapons-based fighting system, includes training with various kinds of bladed and impact weapons – such as swords, sticks, and knives. Training also includes weapons of opportunity - such as anything an individual may have in his person, to use as a self-defense tool. The movements and techniques of the art are easily and readily transferable to any similar object a practitioner may have in hand - this means a person trained in FMA can practically transfer the same skills to any similarly-configured object, such as a pen for a knife. My FMA background includes Rapido Realismo Kali, Modern Arnis, and some limited Pekiti Tirsia Kali and Dekiti Tirsia Siradas. The techniques shown are for demonstration purposes only, as I am more drawn to the artful side of FMA than the combative or sport aspect of it.
