Overcoming IR challenges in low- and middle-income countries: Insights from Prof. Phyllis Dako-Gyeke

Associate Prof. Phyllis Dako-Gyeke, from the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Ghana School of Public Health, sheds light on the obstacles hindering progress of implementation research (IR) in low- and middle-income countries. While IR encourages alternative research designs that facilitate in-depth exploration of contexts and engaging stakeholders, Prof. Dako-Gyeke notes a significant challenge: Health practitioners, heavily oriented towards epidemiological and randomized control trial designs, face difficulty in embracing IR's bottom-up approach. The struggle lies in bridging the gap between their existing knowledge and the innovative tools presented by IR. This discrepancy in design and approach poses a substantial hurdle, hindering the effective incorporation of IR methodologies.
