Here is a look at a rather unique portable television from the early 1980s (around 1983). You might ask why a person like myself who doesn't watch broadcast TV of any kind would have such a collection of portable TV sets. The answer is simple: I like portable TV sets. I do watch pre-recorded commercial free TV shows from the past on videotape and DVD. Sony's Watchman TV sets featured a very interesting high deflection angle CRT with a uniquely positioned screen. The unique CRT was used into the 90s before giving way to LCD style screens and color. While it may have been considered for production, Sony did not manufacture or use a color version of this CRT. This video wraps up with a demonstration of the set. Though the picture quality is nowhere near as good as watching the set in real life, the demonstration does give a rough idea of what watching this set is like. Sets like this one commonly end up in thrift stores, where they can be purchased for very little money. If you know how to do so, though, you can still use and tinker with them around your house.
