2003 Unadilla 125cc Moto 1 (James Stewart's Most Difficult Moto Win)

This is the first 125cc moto from the 2003 Unadilla National in New Berlin, NY. In 2003, Team Kawasaki's James Stewart, Jr. was already in his groove upon his late return to the 125cc Motocross season. The defending champion from 2002 had missed the first 4 races of the season due to a horrifying crash at the Las Vegas 125cc East/West Shootout. Stewart sustained a broken collar bone and concussion in the crash. Taking advantage of Stewart's absence was Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Mike Brown, the 2001 champion. Brown was the winningest rider with 2 overall wins (Glen Helen and High Point) and had 2 moto wins to his credit. KTM's Ryan Hughes #105 swept Hangtown and was the winningest moto winner with 3 moto wins, but James Stewart passed him with 2 sweeps at Budds Creek and the last race at Red Bud to total 4 moto wins in 4 starts, putting him 12th in the standings. Initially, the Kenworthy's race at Troy, OH was to precede the Red Bud race, but severe floods forced the AMA to reschedule the race as the final event of 2003; sadly, another round of floods at its new set date forced the AMA to cancel the Kenworthy's event. KTM's Grant Langston #111, Yamaha of Troy's Craig Anderson #109, and AMSOIL Honda's Michael Byrne #32 were the only other moto winners in 2003 before James' return; of these 3, Craig Anderson was the only one who won an overall (Southwick). It was only the 2nd time an Aussie citizen won an AMA Motocross (Chad Reed won High Point in 2002). Coming into Unadilla, Mike Brown had the points lead by 9 over Langston, despite some lackluster results and crashes in the past 2 races. After starting out the series with 2 wins in the first 3 races, Brown faltered to a 22-3 for 9th overall at Southwick. Ryan Hughes had the points lead after finishing the first moto at Southwick in 10th, but reports were that he broke his fibula in the first moto despite the 10th place finish. Hughes gutted out a 16th in the 2nd moto, but was forced to surrender the points lead right back to Brown. Ryan Hughes tried to ride practice at Budds Creek, but despite an incident with Mike Brown, the pain was too much and he elected to sit out the event altogether. In this moto, James Stewart got out to another early lead. Just when 5 moto wins in a row looked like it was etched in stone, James crashed just when ESPN2 cut back to him. James took a long time to get going and the pack eventually caught up. Stewart had also bent his front brake lever back... virtually leaving him without a front brake. Langston caught up and actually passed the invincible 17-year-old 125cc master. However, James weathered the storm and managed to hold on for his 5th consecutive moto win upon his return. In moto 2, James silenced everyone with another dominating win; the win was James' 6th in 6 motos, and 3 overall wins in 3 races. Unfortunately, Stewart's 4-race-absence proved to be too much for him to win back-to-back 125cc Motocross titles. He ended up 3rd in the final points tally while the title went to Grant Langston by 7 points over Ryan Hughes. Enjoy.
