The Copperhead Snake: Dangerous or Misunderstood?

Copperheads are some of my favorite snakes, and I'd argue among the most beautiful reptiles in North Carolina, but they get a bad reputation for being mean snakes in the media and boring snakes in the herping community for no reason. While it's true that they are the most common venomous snake in the Southeast and are responsible for the majority of venomous snakebites, that's just a testament to their adaptability as humans increasingly urbanize the landscape and eliminate species that can't keep up with the rapid change. These vipers can be found in places where no other venomous snakes seem able to persist - even the highly disturbed, McMansion filled biological desert that we've created and continue to expand upon. To me, the fact that something so beautiful and cryptic continues to survive and thrive in such a wide variety of conditions is remarkable and exciting, not scary.
