The Truth about Ancient Sacrifice

Iphigeneia is one of the few figures in Greek religion who is equally prominent in myth and cult. Her ritual murder at the hands of her father Agamemnon precipitated the Trojan war. She was also worshiped at a local Athenian cult in conjunction with the goddess Artemis: the Brauronia. The Brauronia was an initiation ceremony for young Athenian women. Certain elements of its practice evoked the murder of Iphigeneia – and perhaps her salvation and replacement with an animal. We will look at the basic facts of Greek sacrificial practice and how the Greeks theorized their own movement away from human sacrifice. Questions?
