It delivers an arranger-type experience for a few hundred dollars. Configuration The E-X10 is configured with 61 velocity and touch-sensitive semi-weighted keys, three types of key touch, and two, 12cm (4-3/4 inches) speakers, each with 2.5 Watts of power. It comes with 610 sounds, from piano to orchestral instruments to pop to synths to drums, and it weighs 3.9kg/8.6lb and optionally runs on batteries for maximal portability. Arranger This is the centerpiece of the E-X10. It comes with style options, like Funk, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Ballads, and more, and chording options that let you play a chord with your left hand and have the ABC option create interesting accompaniments based on the chords. You can also choose whether to have your chords audible or not and what sound to have for your audible chords. You also have the ability to connect a microphone and add that to your music mix, including the opportunity to add effects; such as reverb and chorus. Roland has done a decent job of creating an instrument at an extremely affordable price point that allows you to accompany yourself with quite a few different styles, add in a microphone, and feed this out to a basic PA system. Connectivity Apart from the power adaptor connection, the E-X10 has inputs for a pedal, an auxiliary instrument, and a microphone, as well as a headphone/line out and a USB to computer port for MIDI data transfer. This final option allows you to use this keyboard to interact with your computer-based DAW. Comparisons When compared to other keyboards of this style, the E-X10 stands out. Other models, like the Casio ones, experienced a lag in response, a weird key action, or atrocious tone quality. Extras The E-X10 has 140 onboard songs for play-along enjoyment and skill development, as well as a lesson mode and metronome. There is also a basic recording function, but this would work best when used along with a DAW as the built-in functionality would only be for the most basic of situations. The keyboard also has Dual and Split modes. Takeaways The positive takeaways are that the E-X10 is very easy to use, you don’t need to dig through a manual to understand how to use the instrument, and it has a relatively advanced arranger, fundamentally similar to a Yamaha DGX-670 or Roland FP-E50. There is a sacrifice as far as the richness and quality of the sounds when compared to a $1,000 instrument, but this is a quarter of the price. Final Thoughts For a budget-conscious musician who has the opportunity to make a living or even some extra money on the side, the E-X10 is a pretty full-featured instrument. Having two inputs is a great addition as it avoids the need for an external mixer. This keyboard has its own internal mixer that will let you balance the sound between the microphone, the aux input, and the internal sounds. Please like, subscribe, and hit that notification bell!
