Reading & Northern 2102: A Lehigh Division Ramble

June 22nd, 2024 was a historic day for Northeastern Pennsylvania railroading. This day marked the second "Iron Horse Ramble" excursion of the season ran by the Reading & Northern pulled by famous T-1 4-8-4 #2102. What made this trip exceptionally special was the routing, departing from the just-completed Nesquehoning Regional Rail Station to Jim Thorpe Junction where it crossed the Lehigh River and ran the length of the railroad's Lehigh Division to Pittston and continuing to Tunkhannock. This was a thrilling show, as 2102 conquered the grades climbing to Mountain Top, PA pulling a sold-out 17 car train. assisted by diesels for the descent into the Lackawanna Valley. This would be 2102's first trip outside the Reading Division , the first steam in the Lehigh Gorge since 2022, and the first steam to run north of Mountain Top to Pittston and beyond. Enjoy the breathtaking sights and sounds of this mighty locomotive conquering new territory on the Road of Anthracite! History of Reading 2102: Built as I-10sa 2-8-0 #2044 in 1923, 2102 began life as a "ten wheeler" working small assignments throughout the Reading system. At the conclusion of World War II, the I-10sa class was too small to accommodate the ever-growing freight car weights and sizes. With the government prohibiting the Reading from purchasing all new locomotives, they took to their shops to extensively rebuild 2044 and many others in its class to large, 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotives, more than capable of handling the new traffic. Just over ten years later, the era of steam on the Reading was coming to a close, and 2102 was retired in 1956. After working as a stationary boiler, the 2102 was restored and ran on the original Iron Horse Rambles from 1962 until 1965, when the program ended and 2102 would be sold off once more. The sprouting Blue Mountain and Reading Railroad purchased the 2102 in 1985, and operated the locomotive until 1991, when it was pulled from service and remained unused until it's second lease of life began in 2016, with the restoration culminating in 2022.
