When a giant flying robot known as the Black Ox appears in downtown Tokyo wreaking chaos and destruction, even the combined might of the police force proves to be no match for its awesome power. Responsible for the robot's attack is a deranged terrorist, driven mad by the death of his young son, and intent on avenging his loss by first destroying Tokyo and then all human life, leaving the world to be run by a new race of bio-mechanoids. Tokyo's only hope of a saviour comes in the unlikely form of a timid 12-year-old boy named Shotaro Kaneda. During one of Black Ox's devastating attacks on the city, young Shotaro receives a mysterious phone call from an elderly man who reveals a long-guarded secret.
