Within a major U.S. city is a volcano that rises nearly 500 feet above the surrounding landscape. This occurs within the city of Bend, where the extinct volcano known as Pilot Butte stands above the numerous suburbs. Pilot Butte is a spectacular basaltic andesite cinder cone which formed 188,000 years ago in a manner which this video will describe. Thumbnail Photo Credit: Google Earth, Image Landsat / Copernicus.
