BBC Radio 1 & 2 - Ed Stewart (David Hamilton Show) - late November 1977

It's Wednesday November 30th 1977 and the final week of Radio 1 's afternoon show being simulcast on Radio 2. Regular host David Hamilton is taking a week off before starting his new Radio 2 show where he'll be scheduled up against his long-time friend and rival, Tony Blackburn, who moves from mid morning to host Radio 1's new afternoon show. Presenting this final week of the Radio 1 & 2 simulcast afternoon show is veteran DJ Ed Stewart. The programme is stripped of quizzes like the "Mystery Star Competition" as both Radio 1 & 2 afternoon shows will re-launch the following week with new features and, of course, all competitions were strictly postal entries only at this time! However, the "Tea Break" or "Tea at 3" remains and will be carried forward into David Hamilton's Radio 2 era. A couple of points of interest; - Radio 2 is still available on 1500 metres long wave at this time (we're a year a way from the major frequency shake up which handed the BBC's long wave frequency to Radio 4) and so Ed can do a dedication for a regular listener in Switzerland. - On the final clip, this recording switches to Friday's show (December 2nd) and the final link from Ed as Radio 2 fades out Radio 1 and continuity announcer Tim Gudgin picks up to introduce the daily soap "Waggoner's Walk", referring to Ed's need for an early night in order to be up early for his regular Saturday "Junior Choice" show the following morning starting at 8am, also simulcast on Radio 1 & 2. - You can just hear Ed saying "...there you are Dave..." as he's faded out on his handover to Radio 1's Dave Lee Travis. Unusual to have closed the show with a DJ a link. David Hamilton usually ended with a record which Radio 2's continuity announcer could fade out early ahead of Radio 1's 4.30pm news bulletin.
