Dagli immortali vertici...E' gettata la mia sorte - "Attila" by Giuseppe Verdi - John Rawnsley, 1985

Solera's plot must be taken "cum grano salis". The Roman General Flavius Aetius (Ezio) was in real life a valiant warrior. In Solera's plot he looks sort of a traitor who offers a deal to Attila: "take the rest of the world provided that Italy is left to me". In reality he was one of the last Roman leaders to attempt to preserve the integrity of the Western Roman Empire. At the head of a coalition of Romans and German tribes (Franks, Visigoths, Burgundians) he defeated Attila and his allies (Ostrogoths, Gepids) in the year 451 A.D. in the Battle of Chalon (Gaul). But his successes were also his undoing because, resentful for his triumphs, Valentinian the Third, the Roman Emperor, murdered him. As for Attila, he died of brain hemorrhage in his bed.
