Daylighting Science: Aligning Research and Practice - Part 1

This CIBSE Daylight Group event focused on the findings of an online consultation of Daylight Group members carried out in advance of the meeting. The question asked was: Daylighting Science — What do you believe are the key research gaps that practitioners would like to see addressed? The findings of the consultation were presented, together with an attempt to categorise the responses into various research themes. In addition to summarising the findings of the consultation, some respondents were invited to elaborate on their suggestion(s) for research topics. There was much opportunity for discussion on the various proposals, e.g. Which are the most important for practitioners? How do the proposals relate to emerging research landscapes? Are current funding programmes likely to support daylighting research? etc. To help inform how the identified research gaps might be addressed, the event included an exposition of significant daylighting research milestones over the last 40 years, and how they were, in fact, achieved. The route(s) by which research can become practice are often obscured at the time, and only become evident with hindsight.
