4K Katarinahissen tour Stockholm Slussen Sweden 🇸🇪 | Winter Series

The Katarinahissen, or Katarina Elevator, in Stockholm, Sweden, has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1883. It was designed by the engineer Adolf Ahlström and initially operated as a steam-powered elevator, providing a vital link between the Slussen area and the heights of Södermalm. Originally named "Slussen's Skans," the structure was later renamed Katarinahissen in honor of the nearby Katarina Church. It quickly became an iconic landmark, offering panoramic views of the city's skyline and serving as a transportation hub for locals and tourists. The elevator's original steam-powered machinery was replaced with an electric motor in the early 20th century, modernizing its operations. However, by 1935, due to safety concerns and the advancement of transportation infrastructure, the elevator ceased its regular operation. Despite its closure, the tower remained a beloved symbol of Stockholm. In 2010, after a period of closure and renovation, a new, modernized Katarinahissen was unveiled, providing an updated experience for visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views of Stockholm once again. Today, the Katarinahissen stands not only as a functional elevator but also as a historic testament to Stockholm's architectural heritage and a popular tourist destination. Facts about the Katarina lift: The lift will be open between 8am and 10pm The lift is 38 meters high The speed is 1.6 m/s It has capacity for 33 people or 2500kg The new construction is significantly more energy efficient than the previous installation. There is no similar elevator in the world, the execution in the existing steel shaft which is completely open is unique.
