No matter how much an athlete might train for the Olympic Games, many of them also have specific rituals and lucky charms which help build their confidence. From the first Games of the Modern Era to the latest Games of the 20th century, there are many stories like that. William Petterson's participation at the Antwerp Games left us one of these stories. Just before he took this first try in the long jump competition, Petterson found a coin in the runaway, which he then decided to put in his left shoe, hoping for good luck. If the coin influenced or not his performance, we will never know, however, with the coin in his shoe, the Swedish athlete achieved 7.15 metres and won the Olympic gold medal.
