He composed music for Hindi cinema in the 1940s and 1950s, credited on-screen under the name ‘Nashad’ and then later migrated to Pakistan in 1964. He got his early academic education at a local high school in Delhi where he learned to play the flute. He moved to Bombay in the early 1940s for a better future in the music industry. He composed under several names before finally settling for Nashad. Film director Naqshab Zarchavi changed Shaukat Ali's name to Nashad for his film Nagma (1953). He made his music debut under the name Shaukat Dehlavi in the 1947 action film Dildar. The director was Shiv Raj and the lyrics were by C.M. Munir. The cast included Sagina, Yashonat, Dev Radha and Deepak. He composed music for the 1948 film Jeene Do as Shaukat Ali, under the banner of Jay Hind Chitra. Film was directed by A.F. Kika and K.A. Majeed. He used his real name Shaukat Ali in the 1948 film Payal. In 1948, he also composed songs for the film Toote Taare (1948) as Shaukat Dehlavi. Sheikh Mukhtar's film was released under the banner of the production unit "Omar Khayyam Films". The director was Harish, and the cast included Shamim Bano and Motilal. In this film, he composed Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar's famous ghazal "Na Kisi Ki Aankh Ka Noor Hoon '', which became very popular all over India. When Naushad Ali refused, the enraged director Naqshab Zarchavi changed his name from Shaukat Ali to Nashad, so that he would sound like Naushad. Nashad then composed for Jarchavi's 1953 film Nagma, starring Nadira and Ashok Kumar.
