Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf: Sinfonia No.6 in D Major, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Bohumil Gregor

Carl Ditter von Dittersdorf - Sinfonia No. 6 In D Major , ‘Phinée avec ses amis changés en rochers’ (according to other recordings this Symphony has number 5) 1. Andante Piu Tosto Allegretto, 0:00 - 4:27 2. Allegro Assai, 4:28 – 7:26 3. Andante Molto, 7:27 – 15:06 4. Finale: Vivace. Tempo Di Minuetto, 15:07 – 20:53 Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (2 November 1739 – 24 October 1799) was an Austrian composer and violinist. A brilliant child violinist, Ditters played regularly at the age of 12 in the orchestra of Prince von Sachsen-Hildburghausen and later in the orchestra of the Vienna opera. He became friendly with the composer Christoph Gluck and accompanied him in 1761 to Bologna, Italy. There Ditters gained considerable celebrity with his violin playing. In about 1779 he formed a close friendship with Joseph Haydn, who directed five of his operas at Eszterháza, and from 1783 he played in string quartets in Vienna with W.A. Mozart (on at least one famous occasion joined by Haydn and Johann Vanhal, then a popular composer of string quartets). Among his 120-or-so symphonies are twelve programmatic ones based on Ovid's Metamorphoses, although only six have survived (and have also been recorded). He also wrote oratorios, cantatas and concertos (among which are two for double bass and one for viola), string quartets, piano pieces, and other miscellaneous works.
