The Whipple procedure is performed for the treatment of some pancreatic tumors, and it is among the most complex and demanding surgeries in medicine, requiring 6-12 hours to complete 😨. This is a very simplified playdough version so my kid could follow the principles, but it still took us about 3x as long as a typical case. . I was proud my little guy maintained his attention span throughout the case, asking questions and keeping it light with his goofy jokes. He was also very happy to submit a big specimen for his little sister to examine - look out for part II! . If you have a spelling bee 🐝 champion at home, look for the three key reconstructive steps after the pancreatic tumor is removed along with the duodenum (the “pancreaticoduodenectomy”): the pancreaticojejunostomy, hepaticojejunostomy, and lastly, the duodenojejunostomy 😅 . . .
