J. S. Bach - Organ Prelude and Fugue in B minor BWV 544 (Piano trans. by F. Liszt) | Nenad Radic

Prelude and Fugue in B minor BWV 544 was written by Johann Sebastian Bach between 1728 and 1731. Originally, it was composed as the Organ Prelude and Fugue, however, Franz Liszt transcribed it for solo piano (6 Preludes and Fugues S. 462). /// Artist's perspective \\\ Is polyphony a narration? Or a means of narrative? Can narration be a polyphony? With terrifying logic, perfect balance of all elements, great planes, grandeur built not only by richness and layering of sound, but even more by the interwining of all lines, and most of all by the monolithic form, the forefuther J.S.Bach tells us a universal story of sublimity, morality, beauty and Man... Above all, Bach was an organist, a cantor fascinated by the possibilities of the „King of all instruments“, but I am more interested in what he would say about Liszt’s attempt to displace the magnificent BWV 544 into the kingdom of another king, the „Piano kingdom“. The pianist has seemingly unsolvable problems: a) the percussion instrument should conjure up an inconceivable dynamic and coloristic range of organ sound and b) three, four, and occasionally five lines that the organist plays with his hands and feet on three keyboards, the pianist should place in only ten fingers on one keyboard. The gaps between fingers almost constantly require great physical and mental effort. The pianist has great help from the right pedal, but it gives a blurred sound image that colides with the Apollonian purity of all lines. This recording was part of Nenad Radic’s piano recital that took place on 8th of May 2008 at Kolarac Great Hall in Belgrade. Timestamps: 0:00 - Prelude 5:28 - Fugue
