The Bird Photographer of the Year competition, showcasing the beauty and idiosyncrasies of our feathered friends, has been running since 2016. There are eight different categories - Best Portrait, Birds in the Environment, Attention to Detail, Bird Behavior, Birds in Flight, Black and White, Urban Birds, and Creative Imagery. There is also a Portfolio Award and a Conservation Award. Out of 22,000 international entries, Mexican photographer Alejandro Prieto is this year’s grand champion, claiming the prize for his arresting photograph of a greater roadrunner staring up at the barbed-wire-clad border wall between the USA and Mexico.
