AFL: Geelong v Collingwood, 2011 AFL Grand Final Highlights

Highlights of Geelong's emphatic 38 point victory over Collingwood. The cats who's era was meant to be over, after so many so-called experts tipped them not to be able to win a Grand Final, let alone reach the Grand Final this year, went on and won when it counted. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT GAME: GEELONG has stormed to a historic premiership with a dominant last quarter against Collingwood in the Grand Final. After leading by seven points at three-quarter time, the final term was all Geelong, kicking 5.4 to three behinds. Geelong won by 38 points, 18.11 (119) to 12.9 (81). A crowd of 99,537 packed the MCG for the game. Jimmy Bartel was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for best on ground. Bartel, Tom Hawkins and Steve Johnson led a long list of heroes for the Cats, who have now claimed three premierships in the past five years. Hawkins kicked three goals in the third term and marked everything early in the final quarter and although his two shots at goal sailed wide, he set up Johnson for a telling goal with a quick handball. Johnson, who wrenched his knee against West Coast a week ago and was in doubt until an hour before the game, finished with four goals in an outstanding display. Cameron Ling moved as quick as he has for years after snapping a goal to seal the victory with five minutes remaining. The loss is Collingwood's third for the season - all against the Cats. It means coach Mick Malthouse bows out in defeat. He will be replaced by Nathan Buckley for next season. Chris Scott has become the 13th coach in history to coach a premiership in his first season. Tom Hawkins was the star of the third term, kicking three great goals. Bartel showed why he is regarded as arguably the best wet weather player in the game, kicking an outstanding set shot from close to the boundary as the heavens opened at the MCG. But he was matched by an equally brilliant effort at the other end from Magpie Steele Sidebottom, who spun out of trouble and kicked a goal from 45m. The quarter was marred by controversy, with Sharrod Wellingham awarded a goal after his kick appeared to glance off the goalpost. Geelong defenders rushed to point at the post but the goal was awarded, in an incident reminiscent of a goal paid to Hawkins in the tight 2009 Grand Final that he later admitted hit the inside of the post. The goal umpire appeared set to signal a behind before giving the signal for a goal. Tom Lonergan has shut Travis Cloke completely out of the game since being moved on to the big Magpie in the second term. Earlier, Collingwood seemed to have all the momentum when Andrew Krakouer kicked his third goal 18 minutes into the second quarter, giving the Magpies a 15-point lead. Moments earlier Geelong forward James Podsiadly was taken from the ground on a stretcher after dislocating his shoulder in a marking contest. In a huge blow for the Cats, he was subbed out of the game and replaced by youngster Mitch Duncan. But Geelong dug deep to kick three of the last four goals of the quarter to trail by just three points at the main break - after leading by one at quarter-time. At halftime Collingwood 9.3 (57) leads Geelong 8.6 (54). The Cats took advantage of a controversial umpiring decision late in the quarter when Dane Swan was not paid a diving mark he appeared to have taken in the back pocket. From the resulting ball-up Darren Jolly was penalised for deliberately tapping the ball out of bounds - and Jimmy Bartel made him pay with a brilliant snap from the boundary line. Travis Cloke was the dominant forward in the first half, kicking three goals including two huge bombs from well outside 50m. He had an able partner in crime in Andrew Krakouer, who has three of his own including a trademark left-foot snap and a set shot after taking a spectacular mark flying across the front of a pack. Magpies midfielder Scott Pendlebury has 20 disposals in the first half, while Ben Johnson has had the ball 14 times and Dane Swan 13. Geelong made the best possible start when Brad Ottens won the first centre bounce and Varcoe streamed inside 50 to kick a goal on the run after just 15 seconds. Varcoe kicked truly from a set shot four minutes later to give the Cats a 14-0 lead. The Pies got their first goal when Cloke landed a long bomb from 60m after 13 minutes and he followed up with a set shot after 19 minutes to bring the Pies to within a point.
