Theme 5 Mental Health and Well-Being

Welcome to our latest episode, which focuses on Theme 5 of the Birmingham and Lewisham African & Caribbean Health Inequalities Review (BLACHIR): Mental Health and Wellbeing. In this episode, we have the amazing Juney Muhammad, an independent Mental Health Promotion Consultant, sharing her insights and thoughts. We delve into the critical findings and actionable opportunities identified to improve mental health outcomes for Black African and Black Caribbean communities. Key Findings: Awareness and Stigma: There's a significant need for increased awareness and understanding of mental health issues within Black communities, coupled with efforts to reduce stigma. Impact of Racism: Personal histories of racism are recognised as trauma, deeply affecting mental health and well-being. Cultural Competency: Mental health services often lack the cultural competence required to effectively support Black African and Black Caribbean individuals. Access and Trust: There's a notable lack of trust in mental health services, partially due to past experiences of discrimination and inadequate support. Opportunities for Action: 1. Awareness Campaigns: Co-create campaigns to boost understanding of mental illnesses, promote early intervention, and encourage self-referral. Engage carers, families, health services, community, and faith centres. 2. Cultural Competency Training: Equip mental health practitioners with trauma-informed, culturally competent, and patient-centred engagement skills. Extend this training to healthcare, criminal justice, and police services. 3. Acknowledging Racism: Recognise personal histories of racism as trauma to enable more effective and empathetic interventions. 4. Language Matters: Use culturally competent language that reduces stigma, such as preferring "wellbeing" over "mental health". Join us as we explore these essential steps toward creating a more inclusive and supportive mental health landscape for Black African and Black Caribbean communities. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more insights on health inequalities and ways to address them.
