Or how counter intuitive it is that if you have a strong headwind and you're sinking out you should stamp on the speed bar!? Well since a few years ago I always wanted to make a quick little simulation that would allow me to test these things. I didn't get very far in the project but my friend Ricardo, a game developer stepped up to the challenge! In this video I go through the logic algorithm of how to find the center of a thermal when all you have is your variometer (thermals are invisible most of the time). This technique allows you to progressively get closer and closer to the center of a thermal allowing you to not fall out of it and climb in the best lift available. My friend Ricardo did a quick game prototype where we can test this method and it worked surprisingly well. Now the question is what should we do with it? Mobile game? Pc game? 2D or 3D?
