Pioneering treatment to a disease that affects millions of individuals a year is no easy task. In a funny and technical talk, the long and complicated process of developing a solution to retinitis pigmentosa is discussed. Despite the path not always being clear, the research and developments in understanding how stem cells can be part of the solution bring hope to future medical therapies. Henry Klassen, MD, PhD completed his combined doctoral program at the University of Pittsburgh, and is currently an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at UC Irvine. Dr. Klassen’s long-standing research interests focus on the application of neural regeneration strategies to diseases of retina and optic nerve. As a researcher at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, he is currently focused on translational development of retinal progenitor cells as a candidate therapy for retinitis pigmentosa.
