Improvised Sound Art Performance by Li Yilei

In January 2023, esea contemporary — formerly known as Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art — launched its new organisational identity. To celebrate we hosted a housewarming in our newly generated space, where we presented Li's improvised sound art performance. From 18 February the gallery will fully re-open for ‘Practise Till We Meet’, our inaugural exhibition under our new identity. They received their BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths University and MA in Sound Art from the London College of Communication. Li’s multidisciplinary body of work reflects on the tacit nature and transience of existential occurrence, investigating alternative modes of listening and ways of perception. This is heavily influenced by the Eastern philosophy of emptiness, Zen, and impermanence, having been raised by a Buddhist nun. The overarching dialogue around the tacit stems from Li’s idiosyncratic relationship with the outside world as a person on the autistic spectrum. Li’s incorporation of found materials in their sound, sculptures, and multimedia work exemplifies the constant countless serendipitous encounters between beings and their environment. Their early classical training in violin sparked an interest in the physique of instruments. The ensuing rejection of the Eurocentric formalities of classical music eventually led to their unconventional approaches to sound-making. Their applications of sound are often tranquil and minimal, juxtaposed against abrasive and sharp incidences at times. In 2016, Li founded Non Dual Collective, focusing on curating live events for ESEA emerging artists. Li has been releasing records of their musical compositions since their first EP debut, 0:00, in 2018. They have composed for theatre, dance, and filmed that have been premiered and performed internationally.
