The player takes control of Road Runner and guides him through 16 levels collecting bird seed whilst avoiding the various traps set by the devious Wile E. Coyote. The essence of Warner Bros. famous characters was certainly captured here with some great graphics, animation and sound provided by Fred Gray. Road Runner must eat bird seed to keep up his energy. If you miss a pile of seed, the seed meter at the top of the screen reduces by one. If you run out of seed then Road Runner becomes too weak to move and is easy prey for Wile E. Eating seed doesn't replenish energy, it simply prevents any more from being lost. There is a significant bonus at the end of each round for not missing any seed. The other big hook in this game is avoiding the traps and luring Wile E. into them for bonus points. It's extremely satisfying to lure him into the path of oncoming trucks, landmines and being crushed by falling boulders. Even if you get caught in a trap, there is still the chance to escape should Wile E. get blown up/squashed before he can carry you off the screen. The game only has 4 distinct levels before they start looping, but each loop contains a greater variety and quantity of traps, increasing the difficulty and also replayability. The final four levels are ludicrously hard since bird seed is usually surrounded by landmines, but it also means more changes to blow up Wile E. There are also glasses of lemonade lying around that can be drunk for bonus points. These are usually too dangerous to collect since you stop to drink them and Wile E. can catch you easily. The only bad thing I have to say about this is the damn multiload on the tape version. I remember it being a pain on the real C64 and it was a pain recording this. For this longplay I've avoided using the short cut and manage to collect most of the bird seed on each stage. The most entertaining part starts at 28:49 with the most difficult set of levels.
