(15 Jul 1999) English/Nat Indian soldiers were preparing dead Pakistani fighters for burial on Thursday, after a week long battle in the Himalayan mountains. In what turned out to be one of the bloodiest battles yet between Indian soldiers and Pakistani's fighting over the disputed territory of Kashmir, 170 men from both sides were killed. Indian soldiers were digging graves in the Mushkoh Valley for the dead Pakistani fighters whose broken bodies were collected from the jagged ridges of a peak which has an altitude of more than 16-thousand feet and is know as Point 4-8-7-5, for its height in metres. The dead were draped in Pakistani flags and an Indian Muslim soldier was assigned to lead a special prayer during the burial. As the bodies were lowered into graves and covered with stones, Indian officers and soldiers saluted them with military honours, according to military officials. They say several intruding fighters were found in Pakistan army uniforms and others, in guerrilla clothing, were carrying documents proving they were from the Pakistan army. Pakistan denies that its soldiers were involved in the fighting. Dozens of bodies from the intruding forces are still strewn over an area of ten square kilometers (four square miles) across the rocky heights and in mountain crevices.
