Complete Guide On How To Propagate Anubias Plants For FAST GROWTH!!

This is a complete guide on how to propagate anubias plants for the fastest possible growth. We all know how slow anubias can grow which is why it is important to learn the proper tips and tricks for propagating anubias so that we can grow up more individual plants. There are three main ways to propagate anubias: 1. Growing plants from seeds, 2. Strategically splitting the anubias rhizome to stimulate growth, and 3. Naturally waiting for the plant to grow baby anubias plants. There is one other method called tissue culturing which is done on a commercial scale. Of these methods this video will cover method 2 and 3. These are the easiest methods and with some practice can results in many many baby anubias plants from a moderate sized mother anubias. The best part is that these techniques only require a sharp pair of scissors and that’s it! To master these techniques, it is important to understand what the rhizome is and why it is so important from an anubias propagation stand point. The rhizome is what gives rise to 1. Root 2. New leaves and 3. Baby anubias plants. It generally runs horizontally and can be easily identified by following the roots to their origin. The first thing I like to do when cutting anubias is the cut the rhizome to separate the “leading edge” of the anubias. The leading edge of the anubias is the side of the plant that is giving rise to new leaves. By making this first cut you have your first baby anubias plant that will have no problem growing because it already has a leading edge. The act of splitting the anubias rhizome will stimulate the plant to grow baby shoots off the original rhizome. These baby shoots will eventually grow into new plants, so you should be able to start to see the benefit to regularly cutting anubias plants. The next cuts I like to make are of any baby shoots already growing on the original rhizome. In my experience these baby plants will grow faster once cut from the original mother plant especially when they are grown in an emersed set up. Next, I like to find natural spots in the rhizome where I can split the plant easily without damaging any already existing leaves. As a general rule of thumb, I try to leave 2-3 healthy leaves on the portion of the rhizome I am cutting. By using these techniques, you can expect to see AT LEAST one baby shoot to grow per propagated plant. Although it is not uncommon to have 2 or even 3 shoots grow from the stimulation of cutting the rhizome. This is how you can easily turn one mother plant into many baby plants. The next step is growing up your baby anubias plants, so they can be propagated again. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you accidentally break of a leaf or end with a piece of rhizome that has no leaves, DO NOT freak out or THROW IT AWAY! The anubias rhizome is extremely hardy and can grow new plants even when it does not have any leaves. By throwing away pieces of anubias rhizome you are essentially throwing out an anubias plant that you could have grown. The best strategy to salvage these rhizome pieces is to lay them on some damp soil in a humid environment (such as an emersed plant setup) and with some light and time a baby plant will grow!
