Bedford Small Boats Head 2024 Masters C/D Coxed Fours

Bedford Small Boats Head 2024, Masters C/D Coxed Fours, Division 7. Video recorded using a GoPro Hero 12 Black in Max Hyperview mode with Horizon Lock and Max HyperSmooth AutoBoost stabilization active. Statistics recorded using Samsung Health on a Galaxy Watch 4 LTE. Had a few issues with this recording! Firstly, I forgot to stop the watch, so the GPS includes us disembarking and carrying our boat to the slings. Secondly, I didn't have a chance to capture the watch face properly on camera as a crude form of time sync, so honestly, the start and end point of the race in the GPX file was largely guess work. Thirdly, the program I use to add the stats doesn't play nice with the GoPro HEVC format, as it doesn't seem to be able to sync the audio and video, so I had to extract the audio, process the video, and then re-combine the video and audio - so I suspect that they're slightly de-synchronised, although hopefully not enough to enter the "uncanny valley". Lastly, in order to use the "Max HyperView" setting, I had to record in 4k - but the video quality seems to have severely degraded after being processed by the stats program, which is disappointing. I'm sure there's a solution, but there are only so many hours in the day... The speed stats seem to vary pretty wildly, and I'm not sure why. Maybe the GPS lock wasn't solid at all points along the course, or maybe we really did gain and lose speed like that... The export from Samsung Health contained one reading a second, so we only have a resolution of about 2 points per stroke. There may be better ways, or better apps, but the WearOS "tile" makes Samsung Health just about the easiest to launch mid-stroke! As to the race, this was a scratch four in a boat I don't think we've used for over a year, but I row at the opposite end of an eight to the stroke man regularly, with three appearing in the eight regularly too, so it wasn't quite as wobbly as it might otherwise have been. Hadn't rowed behind two for the best part of a year though! Lots of excuses for the performance here - the shoes were a size too small, which was painful by the end of the race, the gate was a little lower than I would have liked, and I'd already jogged 5km in the morning - but the fact that I'm coming out of the water early on most strokes must have played a part too... Ironically, I felt as though I had to draw through lower than I'd have liked to keep the boat level, and felt as though I didn't have much space to tap down at the finish in the boat as it was set up, when clearly some of that was in what I was doing rather than the boat itself! Although my final heart rate is probably about right for a sustained effort, I probably could have reached it earlier and held it for longer - but conversely, no-one wants to burn out before the end of a race, and we're finishing off the part of the year where races double that length are the norm, so my head may still have been in that 5km space... Incidentally, the moments when I remove my right hand from the blade? My right hand had taken on a bit too much water, and I was doing my best to dry enough to have a proper grip for the rest of the race! The race time itself is a bit flattering, as we had the stream and the wind direction somewhat in our favour - if I have time, an analysis of the boat times per division might be in order... And the fact that all of the "D" crews finished behind the "C" crews might imply that the handicap values should have been adjusted, if that pattern persists across the other races... Makes me glad I don't write the newspaper articles for the club these days, and so don't have to do the analysis either! :D
