Korua Shapes Pin Tonic Snowboard Test

Always a good day to be out riding new snowboards on a deep powder day, especially one as capable as the Pin Tonic. When designing this board Korua took inspiration from longboards; trying to design a board with increased float and stability while being able to turn on a dime. Exemplified by lot of the board past the contact points and the short pin tail to increase turnability. Conditions: deep powder Bindings: Now Drive Boots: 32 TM-2 General Feel Although I was riding the 164, it rides quite a bit shorter as the distance between the contact points is quite a bit shorter than the board length, with the extra board only working once in the powder. Something to keep in mind - this isn't a super responsive technical board to ride some super gnarly double black rock chutes. There is a small delay in initiating turns, giving it more of a cruisey cruiser board. Riding Powder With 20mm set back, about 30mm taper (depending on size) and directional size and flex this board is really designed to shred in powder. Korua rates this snowboard 10/10 for powder and backcountry/ trees. It not only has really good float but it great at maintaining momentum at lower speeds and lower angle terrain. As it's designed with inspiration from longboards, steep powder is a little out of the wheel house, and I noticed at high speed stability on the board did drop. Riding Trees Had the opportunity to ride this board through some open and tight trees, and it's very capable at handing the heavy snow that is ubiquitous with skiing in the PNW. It was the morning after a storm and lots of fresh snow on the ground; the Pin Tonic was fantastic at accessing the untouched parts of mountain. Really great glide at slower speed, and Korua makes really fast bases which hold their speed. I seemed to be so much faster than everyone else, probably also due to this just coming from a tune-up at Underground Tuning. Short pin tail sinks nicely in the powder and helps with short fast turns when necessary. Great at navigating tight trees and spaces, the slow initiating not having as much effect in the deep snow as the groomed runs. Jumping/ Freestyle Camber under foot helps jumping off backcountry features or side hits, but is noticeably softer than their Transition Finder. The TF has a pretty steep angle on the tail, similar to the Orca but without the kink, and when landing awkwardly on the tail has a tendency to fling me out and there's little give in the tail. Different story on the Pin Tonic, less pop for sure, but had a few landing that I was surprised to ride away from. Pin tail butters and great with that softer tail as it's easier to find the stay in balance point. Butter spins on the nose were easy to initiate but harder to get out of with that big soft nose requiring more energy to pop. Switch More capable switch than it may look, as mentioned before the softer tail is more forgiving to land on, but it's also gentler when initiating switch turns compared to other directional boards. Less chance the board grabs the snow compared to Transition Finder. Landing switch is also quite comfortable. Overall Great board for those looking to add to their quiver with a unique feeling board that excels in powder and trees, or as a quiver killer for those people that aren't spending much time in the Terrain Park. Much more suited for backcountry jumps and tricks. 8.5/10 Korua Website: https://koruashapes.com/products/pin-... #koruashapes #snowboardreview #powdersnow #whistlerblackcomb
