I love the countryside more as it's less explored by tourists so you really can see this "raw" kind of Japan and understand the local culture and history more. Each prefecture has it's own speciality and history so what better way to immerse yourself in the culture than to try a homestay experience? :) I know a lot of you are worried if you can't speak Japanese but honestly you will be fine! It's not the language that matters, it's the connection between two people so step out of your comfort zone and try it. Japanese people in the countryside tend to be very friendly too and I'm sure they will give you a helping hand if you are lost even if they don't speak English.
