The End of an Era - China clay was discovered in Cornwall in the mid 1700s. The great scars of this industry still mark the St Austell area and are widely reputed to be one of the few man-made structures visible from space. This section of mid-Cornwall it’s nickname the ‘Cornish Alps’. Used principally in the production of porcelain and paper, the industry is still strong in Cornwall to this day. That is, until August 2023, when after a life-span of 36 years, the wagons used have reached the end of their service. I've wanted to make a film about Cornish China Clay for some time, and I find it lucky to know that I made this film before they exited service. Had I filmed one week later, I would’ve waited by the side of the line, and nothing would’ve turned up.
