The dangerously skilled “Bad” Bennie Briscoe takes on hard hitting world ranked Middleweight contender Tony Mundine at Palais des Sports, Paris, France. Prefight records; Briscoe 48(41)-12-1, Mundine 44(38)-2-1. Tony Mundine is revered as one of the most accomplished indigenous fighters from Australia and considered to be one of the Greatest Australian Boxers of All Time. He is also the father and trainer of former 2x WBA Super Middleweight Champion Anthony Mundine who competed against the likes of Sven Ottke, Mikkel Kessler, Joshua Clottey, Daniel Geale & Shane Mosley. Going into the fight, 22 year old Mundine had notable wins over Nessim Max Cohen, Denny Moyer & Emile Griffith while the veteran Briscoe had commendable victories over the likes of Art Hernandez, Billy Douglas, Tom Bethea, Joe Shaw, Vicente Rondon & George Benton. From the opening bell, Briscoe attempted to cut off the ring while Mundine utilized a good jab to keep him at bay; connecting with left hooks and right crosses on his backfoot, countering well as he circled around the ring and fighting off the ropes. Bad Bennie moved forward incessantly, taking Tony’s best shots while working his unflinching body work to break down the younger challenger who often return the favor at even terms. But round after round, Mundine’s hands were starting to lower down and taking more punches upstairs especially right hooks from the Philadelphian. Both men were cut above their right eyes in the 2nd stanza. Entering the 5th, Mundine was ahead in points but Bennie was starting to close in on him due to accumulation of effective body punches followed by hooks to the head that finally took a toll on Tony; pinning him on the ropes with thunderous combinations that ultimately sent him to the canvas and counted out by referee Paul Tallyrach. After the loss, Mundine picked up 3 more wins between May and August in the same year before challenging the great Carlos Monzon for the WBA World Middleweight Title on October 5th. He was knocked out in the 7th round after a valiant effort in his only world title shot throughout his 15 year career. 7 years earlier, Briscoe was brought to Argentina as a test for then 40(28)-3-6 rising 24 year old Monzon where both fought a careful tactical battle en route to a disputed D10. Although it is worth noting that earning a draw against Monzon in Argentina at that point would have been a win in the United States. On November 11th 1972, Briscoe faced Monzon again and this time for the WBA & WBC Middleweight Championships. He managed to wobble the champion in the 9th but failed to knock him out and lost a lopsided decision as he was outworked by the Argentinian legend for the most part of the bout. Briscoe retired in 1982 with a final record of 66(53)-24-5 and in his 20 year long pro career he had only been stopped once by Rodrigo Valdez during their 2nd meeting in May 1974. “Bad” Bennie Briscoe isis widely considered to be one of the Greatest Uncrowned Boxers in the history of the sport.
