Manchester Metrolink - Eccles & Altrincham branches and more City Centre - Thursday 14th July 2022

On Thursday 14th July, we completed the “south-side” operation of the Manchester Metrolink network by covering the Eccles branch from Eccles to Exchange Quay and the Altrincham branch from Altrincham to Old Trafford. On the Eccles branch (about to close for major track renewal after 20 years), we work stop by stop back to the Quays and both of the latest deliveries of Alstom M5000 Flexitys – 3141 and 3142 – were working the branch and through to Ashton-under-Lyne. Please note that, at Weaste, the flats with the traditional façade are on the site of Salford City Transport’s former Weaste depot and the façade is part of that depot. Alongside the depot, as you will see in the slideshow, the original tram track is still in place on Hessall Street. (As an aside, the portal to Salford City Transport's other depot at Frederick Road has also been utilised to form the façade of another new building so, in some small way, Salford City Transport lives on) On the Altrincham branch, there is some single line running alongside similar heavy rail operation and you will see this in operation. The Altrincham branch is also home to Old Trafford – the headquarters of Lancashire County Cricket Club. In the slideshow, observant viewers will spot someone famous aboard one of the M5000s. In the City Centre, we see three new allover adverts: 3081 and 3092 advertising Starling Bank and 3087 advertising Paramount television. On the day, we see 7 of the 9 allover adverts with only 3030 (Pension Bee) and 3117 (Lifebuoy soaps) missing from the collection but we have covered them on past videos. Of the fleet, at least the following trams features across the video and the slideshow: 3003 3004 3007 3008 3010 3011 3013 3014 3016 3017 3018 3021 3022 3023 3024 3029 3031 3032 3033 3034 3036 3037 3038 3040 3042 3043 3045 3046 3047 3048 3052 3053 3054 3055 3056 3059 3060 3062 3064 3066 3067 3068 3069 3070 3073 3074 3075 3076 3077 3079 3081 3082 3086 3087 3091 3092 3093 3094 3095 3097 3098 3100 3102 3103 3105 3106 3107 3108 3110 3112 3115 3119 3120 3121 3122 3126 3128 3129 3131 3133 3135 3136 3137 3139 3141 3142 We also see 3022 named “we love MCR” and 3098 named “Gracie Fields”. We now have seen every tram except 3005 (long time out of service - though we do have a photo of it when in service), 3019 and 3083 (both of which keep evading the camera even though we have seen them!) and, of course, 3143 (yet to enter service) and 3144-3147 yet to be delivered. On our next visit(s), we will complete the network by looking at the Shaw and Crompton to Rochdale branch and the Burt branch, both ending at Manchester Victoria. As we now have almost the complete collection of Metrolink tramcars, we can provide you with any or all of them as j-peg images by email. Please contact us at [email protected] for more details. Our next adventure will be back to West Midlands Metro where through running from Wolverhampton St.George's to Edgbaston Village via the City Centre, Centenary Square (Library), Brindleyplace and Five Ways. Alot more off-catenary running features along this section. So, as they say, watch this space for the next exciting instalment!
