Breathing Patterns (Abnormal and Irregular Respirations) | Respiratory Therapy Zone

This video breaks down all of the Abnormal and Irregular Respirations Breathing Patterns that you MUST know as a Respiratory Therapist (or healthcare worker). 💥Breathing Patterns [Full Guide] ➜ ➜ ➜ http://bit.ly/2pZP7VG 🟦 Why Should You Know the Breathing Patterns? First and foremost, there are 3 reasons why you must be familiar with the breathing patterns that we are going to talk about in this video. 1. Because you will be required to know this information for your exams in school. 2. Because you will see this information again when you take your board exams. 3. Because you will need to recognize these breathing patterns once you start seeing patients as a Respiratory Therapist. ➡️ Eupnea Eupnea is normal breathing and includes a normal respiratory rate of 12 -20 breaths per minute. The pattern, depth, and rhythm and are normal as you can see as the waves go up and down at a normal rate. ➡️ Tachypnea Tachypnea means that there is an increased respiratory rate greater than 20 breaths per minute. It is caused by hypoxia, fever, pain, or a central nervous system problem. ➡️ Bradypnea Bradypnea means that there is a decreased respiratory rate less than 12 breaths per minute. It is caused by sleep, drug overdose, alcohol, and some metabolic disorders. ➡️ Apnea Apnea means that there is no breathing. It is a complete shutdown of the respiratory system. The patient is not breathing. It is seen in death, head trauma, and strokes. ➡️ Hyperpnea Hyperpnea means that there is an increased respiratory rate, rhythm, and depth of breathing. It is usually caused by metabolic or CNS disorders. ➡️ Cheyne-Stokes Breathing It is an abnormal breathing pattern with periods of progressively deeper breaths alternating with periods of shallow breathing and apnea. You often see this breathing pattern in brain stem injuries and when the patient has an increased ICP. 🟦 TMC Exam Hint: For the TMC Exam and Clinical Sims, when you get a problem with a patient showing the Cheyne-Stokes breathing pattern, most of the time, you can automatically assume that the patient has had a stroke. This little tidbit should come in handy when you take the exam. Our study guides are loaded with these helpful Exam Hints. If you're interested, you can find links down below in the description. ➡️ Biot's Breathing It is characterized by irregular periods of apnea alternating with periods in which four or five breaths of identical depth are taken. Essentially, the patient is rapid gasping for air followed by a period of apnea. ➡️ Kussmaul's breathing For Kussmaul's breathing, I want you to remember DEEP and FAST. It has an increased respiratory rate and depth, with an irregular rhythm. This is a labored form of breathing that is usually associated with diabetic ketoacidosis. ➡️ Orthopnea This means that the patient has trouble breathing while lying flat. It is seen in patients with CHF, pulmonary edema, and fluid overload. ➡️ Apneustic Breathing It is an abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by deep, gasping inspiration with a pause at full inspiration followed by a brief, partial expiration. It indicates that there is damage to the pons and is associated with head trauma, severe brain hypoxia, or lack of blood flow to the brain. 💥Breathing Patterns [Full Guide] ➜ ➜ ➜ http://bit.ly/2pZP7VG ————— 📗 BEST STUDY GUIDES FOR YOU ▪ TMC Test Bank 👉 http://bit.ly/2IGeqSu ▪ Hacking the TMC Exam 👉 http://bit.ly/2XBc8do ▪ TMC Exam Bundle (Save $) 👉 https://bit.ly/34pqEsV ▪ Daily TMC Practice Questions 👉 http://bit.ly/2NnXh3C 💙MORE FROM RTZ ▪ Free TMC Practice Exam 👉 http://bit.ly/2XlwASL ▪ Free RRT Cheat Sheet 👉 http://bit.ly/2IbmOKB ▪ Resources for RT's 👉 http://bit.ly/2WVV5qo ▪ Testimonials 👉 http://bit.ly/2x7b5Gl 🌐FOLLOW US ▪ Instagram 👉 http://bit.ly/2FhF0jV ▪ Twitter 👉 http://bit.ly/2ZsS6T1 ▪ Facebook 👉 http://bit.ly/2MSEejt ▪ Pinterest 👉 http://bit.ly/2ZwVLPw 🚑MEDICAL DISCLAIMER Medicine and Respiratory Therapy are continuously changing practices.
